PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Senate has approved two bills to reduce state spending by nearly $300 million and help cut the state's $2 billion budget shortfall.
The Senate's vote Monday on the main bill was 16-11, with all the yes votes coming from majority Republicans. Democrats and one Republican voted against it.
Republicans negotiated to get Democratic votes in exchange for a change that would benefit school districts on Indian reservations. But that deal never materialized. One Republican who objected to another bill in the package ended up voting for the bills to reduce spending.
The overall package would close about a quarter of the state's projected $2 billion midyear budget shortfall.
