Arizona gets $1.2M in federal public housing funds

PHOENIX (AP) - Four public housing authorities in Arizona will share more than $1.2 million in federal grants.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the grants Friday. In all, the agency awarded $28 million to housing authorities, resident associations, tribes and other nonprofits across the nation.

Officials say the money will be used to hire or retain service coordinators to help public housing residents find jobs and achieve economic and housing independence.

The funding will also link the elderly and people with disabilities with support services that allow them to maintain independent living situations.

The Arizona entities that have been awarded grants include the cities of Tucson and Phoenix, the housing authority in Yuma and the San Carlos Housing Authority.
