TUCSON-Arizona receiver Delashaun Dean has confirmed to News 4 Tucson that he is transferring to Texas A&M-Kingsville. His transfer comes just a week after he was arrested for possession of a concealed weapon.
Early in the morning on June 19th Dean was among a group that went to eat at I-HOP on North Oracle Road. Soon after he arrived, police were called when someone reported that Dean was flashing a gun.
When officers arrived Dean was frisked and nothing was found but later two guns, one of which was his were found under his car. Dean was then charged.
Dean claims he never flashed the gun and that he placed it under his car because he didn't have the keys to unlock it.
"It was basically poor judgment on my part but I didn't see anything wrong with it," said Dean. "I wasn't involved in an altercation. I wasn't bothering anybody. I was trying to go eat and I didn't feel comfortable taking my firearm inside the establishment."
The following Monday, Dean was informed by Arizona head coach Mike Stoops that he would be suspended indefinitely from the team for breaking Stoops' no-firearms policy.
Dean says that he carries a gun, for which he has a permit, for protection after several instances of being threatened.
"It's pretty much been an ongoing thing since I've been here," he said. "I've been in different situations. I've been jumped. I've been robbed, home invaded."
Now Dean wants to act as an example for any other athletes carrying guns.
"I just took the burden of it," said Dean. "I just want to tell everybody that does have a firearm you might want to get rid of it fast before you end up like me."
