PHOENIX (AP) - John Huppenthal is out of office after one term as Arizona's top education official.
Huppenthal went down in the Republican primary for superintendent of public instruction after acknowledging that he made a series of offensive, anonymous Internet postings on blogs and news stories. The postings made disparaging remarks about welfare recipients, Planned Parenthood and Spanish-language media.
Huppenthal tearfully apologized for his actions at a June news conference where he rebuffed calls to step down.
He lost to Diane Douglas, who focused almost all of her campaign on repealing the Obama administration-supported Common Core education standards.
