TUCSON - If you're tired of that thumping washing machine or dishwasher that doesn't get the job done, you might want to start shopping. One month from today, you could replace those old appliances and get some money in return.
On April 12, the state is handing out about 35,000 reservations for rebates on energy efficient appliances. You could get your reservation either over the phone or online but you would need to act fast. They're expected to run out the first day.
The money is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The U.S. Department of Energy awarded Arizona $6.2 million for the Arizona Appliance Rebate Program.
The rebates are for energy efficient washing machines, dishwashers or water heaters that have the Energy Star Rating. The rebates range from $75 to $425. That would be on top of any manufacturer's rebate.
Once you get your reservation in the mail, you'll have several weeks to buy your appliance and submit the forms. It's a mail-in rebate. Appliances purchased before April 12, will not qualify.
The exact time frame to call or log-on to receive your reservation on April 12, has not been released yet.
David Drennon, communications and marketing director with the Arizona Department of Commerce, says you could receive more than one rebate.
"If you want more than one rebate, you would need to call back in to the hotline or log back onto the website to request a rebate for a different appliance category," Drennon said.
