Ariz. DPS seizes $3M cash from truck

NEW RIVER, Ariz. (AP) - The Arizona Department of Public Safety has discovered more than $3 million in suspected drug money after stopping a commercial vehicle on Interstate 17 in New River.

Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Roger Vanderpool says the department has an ongoing effort to deprive drug cartels of their cash as they try to transport it through the state.

A DPS officer stopped the truck for an equipment violation Friday. The officer saw signs of criminal activity and received consent to a canine search of the vehicle.

The search revealed four unmarked boxes that didn't match the rest of the load. They contained the vacuum sealed cash.

The DPS says the truck driver and co-driver, who were not named, were interviewed and released pending further investigation.
