Applications to be accepted for Grand Canyon river trip permits

GRAND CANYON - The National Park Service will begin accepting applications for noncommercial river trip permits to raft the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park beginning in February.

Each year in February, a main lottery is held to assign launch dates for river trips occurring the following year.

A total of 461 permits will be available on Saturday, February 1, 2014 for 12 to 25 day river trips in 2015. Applications will be accepted online through noon on February 25, 2014.

Individuals interested in applying for a river trip permit must be 18 years or older and may participate on a maximum of one recreational river trip per year, either commercial or noncommercial.

Technical whitewater experience is mandatory on each noncommercial river trip and must be self-guided. People wanting to attend a professionally-guided river trip should not apply through the lottery.

Follow-up lotteries will be held as needed throughout the remainder of the year to reassign canceled and/or left-over river trips.

For more information regarding the 2015 weighted lottery, you can visit the Grand Canyon National Park web site or you can contact the River Permits Office at 1-800-959-9164.
