Appeals court hears case of ex-Rep. Rick Renzi

SEATTLE (AP) - A federal appeals court is hearing former U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi's appeal of his convictions on public corruption and money laundering charges.

Arguments are scheduled Tuesday afternoon in Seattle.

A federal jury in Arizona convicted Renzi in June 2013. He was sentenced in December to three years in prison. Renzi is free on bail pending his appeal.

In court filings, defense attorneys say Renzi should be acquitted or get a new trial because the government presented insufficient evidence and the trial judge improperly limited his defense. Prosecutors say Renzi isn't entitled to acquittal or a new trial.

The Republican represented Arizona's 1st Congressional District from 2003 to 2009.

He didn't run for re-election in 2008 while facing federal charges accusing him of looting a family insurance business to help pay for his 2002 campaign.
