Amazon's 3D printing shop is open for business

Amazon is getting into the 3-D printing game.

On Monday, the Web giant opened its 3-D printing store, which lets people customize their own products and print them on demand.

Now users can create 3-D bobblehead dolls of themselves, buy custom jewelry or — if they are really into "Game of Thrones" — design their own wax seal.

Right now, there are more than 200 products for sale in the store, ranging in price from less than $40 to a little more than $100.

Amazon is hoping that widgets that let people customize their own products might entice users who don’t want to learn how to use 3-D modeling software.

The technology, which prints out products layer by layer (usually with plastic), “suggests the beginnings of a shift in online retail — that manufacturing can be more nimble to provide an immersive customer experience,” Petra Schindler-Carter, director of sales for Amazon Marketplace, said in a statement.
