Agricultural pest nabbed at the border

SAN LUIS - Some alert customs agents caught a tiny hitchhiker trying to get into the U.S.

A mining bee was found hidden in a shipment of celery, trying to come through the San Luis Port of Entry on April 6.

A national U.S.D.A. indentifier says the mining bee is a new pest.

The entire shipment was quarantined because of the risk of introducing disease and parasites to U.S. bees.

Mining bees typically nest in sandy soil in the ground.
