ADOT works to improve safety during a dust storm

PINAL COUNTY - Arizona Department of Transportation recommendations can perhaps improve the safety of I-10 near Eloy and Picacho Peak, when a Haboob sweeps through Southern Arizona.

Over a 10 year period, there have been more than 100 accidents and 8 fatalities from Tucson to Phoenix along I-10, all related to dust storms.

A-DOT says the best advice when a dust storm rolls in, is to pull over and ride out the storm. A-DOT spokesperson, Dustin Krugel, says they are doing their best to ensure safety on the roadways.

"More crews driving and reporting on road conditions, and using our dynamic message boards to alert drivers of blowing dust as much as possible," he said.

The National Weather Service is looking to install low cost air quality sensors that would detect dust storms. It would allow law enforcement and A-DOT to respond quicker to the scene.
