FLORENCE - A total of 93 dogs and five exotic birds were taken in by Pinal County Animal Care and Control personnel Tuesday afternoon; authorities say the house they were taken from was uninhabitable.

Personnel responded to the extreme hoarding case to find a home with no electricity and no running water, according to a news release from Pinal County. The floor was covered with garbage and several inches of fecal matter. One dog had to be euthanized due to severely-infected bite wounds.

"We worked this incident in fear for our own health," Dickson said. "I cannot fathom how the two adult residents were able to live there."

The owner voluntarily surrendered the animals; they will be put up for adoption following examinations by a veterinarian.

"Our officers have responded to multiple cases of animal hoarding in the last twelve months," said Kaye Dickson. "We worked through the night to shuttle these animals to our shelter after finding them on a remote rural property. Our shelter is exceeding capacity and we are operating under emergency conditions."

The Pinal County Animal Care and Control Shelter's hours this month will be from 8 AM to 6 PM. The adoption offices will be closed on Saturdays in February.
