TUCSON - With the modern streetcar just days from its big kickoff, hot spots downtown, and near campus are ready to roll-in some serious business.
More than 30 shops and restaurants are offering specials or discounts on opening weekend. They see it as their chance to be noticed by potential customers as they try out the new streetcars.
Magpies Pizza is just steps from the first stop on 4th Ave. where the streetcar rounds the corner from University Ave. "The street car stops by every 10 minutes or so," says Kyle Rytting with Magpies.
Prime real estate, according to restraint managers, who will be trying to attract riders this weekend. "Hopefully we're going to see a huge influx of customers," said Rytting.
They're hoping for nearly twice as much business thanks to the streetcar, so they're bringing in twice as much help. "We've got a lot of people that have been recently trained and hired, so we're prepared," said Rytting.
And they're not the only ones getting ready.
At Delectables restaurant, owner Donna DiFiore did most of her planning 9 months ago, when she doubled the size of her kitchen, and quadrupled the length of the bar, estimating more traffic also arriving via streetcar.
"I would gain a minimum of 30 customers a day," said DiFiore.
With just two days left, she's looking forward to putting her additions to use. "So we'll be ready to roll this season, October and forward with more volume and yes, we've tested it and we know how to use it."
Magpie managers say they realize the numbers may go down after opening weekend, only to peak again when U of A students return in the fall.
