The following is a release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection:
SAN LUIS, AZ - A 19-year-old Mexican male was taken into custody Thursday for attempting to smuggle more than two and a half pounds of heroin into the United States.
Customs and Border Protection officers referred Luis Humberto Hernandez-Romero for additional inspection of his Nissan sedan. After a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs inside of the vehicle, officers located nearly $36,000 worth of heroin inside of Hernandez' sneakers.
The drugs and vehicle were seized. Hernandez was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
Individuals arrested may be charged by complaint, the method by which a person is charged with criminal activity, which raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent unless and until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
