UPDATE: The drowning victim at Tanque Verde Falls has been identified as 29-year-old Richard M. Baker.
TUCSON - A 29-year-old man drowned after falling at the Tanque Verde Falls near Redington Pass on Sunday.
Pima County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call for a rescue of a possible drowning around 5pm. Witnesses told deputies that the man was jumping off the cliffs into the water pools.
"It appeared that he sustained an injury prior to entry into the water and at that point he did not resurface immediately," said Deputy Jesus Banuelos.
Banuelos said that bystanders jumped into the water to try and rescue the man. Once they got the man out of the water, he was unconscious and not breathing.
"At that point the people that were there began CPR immediately and upon the deputies' arrivals, they also assisted with the CPR," Banuelos said, adding: "It wasn't until paramedics had arrived and assessed the patient that they advised that the person had passed."
A DPS Ranger air unit ultimately recovered the man from the tough terrain before the medical examiner's office arrived on scene.
The man's name has not been released yet.
