MARANA - Another day of practice is in the books and now it's time to begin the competition starting bright and early on Wednesday morning. First out of the barrel will be last year's winner. Ian Poulter from England taking on American, Stewart Cink in Match 1 at 07:35 AM. Subsequent matches are scheduled to depart in 10 minute intervals until the last match, #32, tees off at 12:35 PM. Other matches of note have the bracket leaders Phil Mickelson (USA) vs Brendan Jones (Australia) at 11:55, Tiger Woods (USA) vs Thomas Bjorn (Denmark) at 12:15, Lee Westwood (England) vs Henrik Stenson (Sweden) at 12:55, and finally, Martin Kaymer (Germany) vs Seung-yuk Noh (S. Korea) at 12:55.
Looking back at today, from the fans point of view, the major action revolved around Tiger Woods arrival at the course. Tiger gave a media interview at noon in front of the clubhouse then headed for the driving range taking time along the way to sign autographs for a good number of fans that formed what amounts to a gauntlet between the clubhouse and the driving range. The crowd was noticeably larger and more boisterous than it had been all morning. After hitting some practice shots at the range for a period of time, he headed off for a practice round on the course. As it was 2 years ago when Tiger was last here, the crowds following him around the course were very large for a practice round.
Another fan favorite, Phil Mickelson, made it to Tucson today but did not practice on the course. It will be interesting to see how fast he spins up tomorrow during his competition round.
Today was also the day that Ian Poulter found out what outfit he was going to wear for his match tomorrow. With the help of News 4 Tucson, and their head sportscaster, Ryan Recker, the Tucson community voted online to identify which of 3 outfits would adorn the daper Mr. Poulter on Wednesday. Ryan announced the results to Poulter and a large, enthusiastic crowd this morning at the course. Speaking of News 4 Tucson, I invite you to watch their special about the Accenture Tournament titled, "Inside the Ropes", this coming Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 AM.
