TUCSON - Bike fest 2011 is already underway, but it wouldn't be complete without this Sunday's Cyclovia!
Daniella Diamente is this year's event coordinator and says this 2nd annual gathering is a way to see beautiful Tucson from a new lens!
"The idea is to come out, walk with your family, walk with your dog, take a bike ride; enjoy the different activities and enjoy the fact that there aren't cars in the street that day," Diamente said.
To take part in the festivities, just head Downtown this Sunday where you'll find 5 miles of Tucson streets closed off to cars, and open to all sorts of fun!
"We have free Zumba classes, live music, kids bike safety stuff," Diamente continued.
Kurt Rosenquist and his wife, who own Fitworks Cycling Support and 02 Modern Fitness, had a booth at last year's event and will be back this Sunday!
"It makes cycling something for everyone. Not something just for commuting or for racers," he said.
Last year the event had roughly 10,000 attendees, and Tom Thivener says going car free made people feel more secure.
"Last year it was really evident that we reached a new market in people that are interested but have some concerns about biking with traffic in Town," Thivener said.
So what do you need to know before you go?
"You don't have to be a Lance Armstrong type for this event. Come in your casual clothes, something cool to wear, bring some water but we'll have water to refill your bottle and just take it easy," he said.
Again, the event will be held this Sunday, March 27th from 10 A.M. until 3 P.M. It's completely free, and there will be plenty of event organizers, volunteers, and police personnel to assist with traffic and help direct any cars to alternate routes with minimal delays!
