RIO RANCHO, N.M. (AP) - Officials say a balloon participating in Albuquerque's International Balloon Fiesta hit a power line Wednesday morning, sending two men to the hospital with burns and injuries after a 40-foot fall.
Police in Rio Rancho say the balloon got tangled in the lines about 8:30 a.m. Festival spokesman Tom Garrity says when the passenger reached out to free the gondola, he was shocked.
The balloon was freed, but the gondola crashed to the ground.
Police say one man sustained serious burns to his face, chest and arms and underwent surgery at the University of New Mexico Hospital. The other man was in stable condition with burns to his head.
The balloon was registered to pilot Mark Kilgore of Albuquerque. But Garrity says it is not immediately known if Kilgore or a secondary pilot was flying the balloon.
