19-year-old charged for murder of man found dead in road

TUCSON - Police have arrested a 19-year-old man for the 2nd Degree Murder of a man found dead on a midtown roadway last week.

Zechary Mazitis was arrested at a midtown residence yesterday and charged with 2nd Degree Murder, Abandonment or Concealment of a Dead Body, and Possession of a Weapon by a Prohibited Possessor, Tucson Police officials say.

Detectives have determined that Gonzalez was at Mazitis' residence at the 700 block of East Buddy Lane, conducting a narcotics transaction. A physical confrontation occurred, culminating with Mazitis shooting Gonzalez.

Detectives say Mazitis then removed Gonzalez's body, then dumped it near the intersection of Cherry Ave. and Kleindale Rd. The body was found at 5:42 a.m. on July 9.

The investigation is still ongoing, and TPD asks with anyone with additional information about this incident call 911 or 88-CRIME.
