TUCSON - With most U of A students off for the summer there may not have been much dancing in the streets around the university when the Arizona Wildcats beat South Carolina to win the 2012 College World Series Championship. But Cats fans were well represented at several bars and restaurants around Tucson.
At Sam Hughes Place, at North Cambell Avenue and 6th Street, a large crowd packed the restaurant cheering on Arizona with every pitch. The Wildcats provided plenty of drama in route to their 10th straight win at the tournament leading through 5 innings before South Carolina tied it up in the bottom of the 6th. But after sealing the victory with 3 runs in the ninth Cats fans were ready to celebrate and they didn't have to wait long as Arizona quickly shut down South Carolina to win the championship.
Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild watched the game at Sam Hughes Place and was overjoyed with the victory, "It just makes us all happy tonight to be Tucsonans, to be U of A fans", and as the crowd chanted "U of A, U of A", the mayor said, "that's what it's all about right there."
