What is Kristi's Kids Lifesaver?

Eight years ago, we launched our Kristi's Kids-News 4 Tucson Lifesaver campaign after a record number of child drownings in Southern Arizona.

The number of child water incidents has decreased significantly in Pima County, but we have yet to make it through a summer without losing a child.

In 2016, we had seven incidents in Pima County: Five child near-drownings (four boys and one girl) and two child drownings (one boy and one girl.)

You can see the 2017 log here

The Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona will also hold free CPR training.

For this year's Swim Fest we've again partnered with the YMCA of Southern Arizona, and teamed up with area Fire Departments, Safe Kids of Pima County, Tucson Medical Center for Children, Cenpatico Integrated Care, Association of Pool & Spa Professionals – Central, Honda, E-Konomy Pool Service & Supplies, HealthSouth, Southern Arizona Chapters, Legoland, and CPR2U to educate viewers on how they can prevent children from drowning.

School will be over for most kids next week, and a lot of them will be hitting the pools. That’s all the more reason we can't stress the ABC’s of water-safety: A - for active adult supervision; B - for barriers; and C - for classes. That means swim classes for kids, and CPR instruction for older children and adults. However, even with all those things in place, doing away with parents' misconceptions about drowning, can truly make the difference when it comes to being a l...

  • Tucson mom continues mission to prevent drowning

A drowning, or near-drowning, can happen at any time and to anyone. There's a Tucson mom who's made prevention her mission. It takes less than a minute for someone to drown, or nearly drown. In the blink of an eye, lives can, and do, change forever. “It just bothers me every time I hear that someone else is getting hurt, and it's 100% preventable,” said Rose Bennett, whose son, Ethan, nearly drowned at a day-camp in 2009, when he was six-years old.   “Unfortun...

This month is Autism Awareness Month, and we're also weeks into swim season. Many of you have been asking about water-safety programs that are available to kids on the spectrum. The numbers really do take your breath away. An estimated one in 64 kids in Arizona will be diagnosed as being on the spectrum, and they're 160- times more likely to drown. That’s why last May, the Autism Society of Southern Arizona teamed-up with Saguaro Aquatics to create the Sonoran Dolphins program...

For three solid months, we have been promoting water safety and drowning prevention around southern Arizona through our Kristi's Kids Lifesaver campaign. We've given hundreds of kids free swim lessons, and we are still giving away pool fences and more. Today, we would like to offer a reminder - all day, every day, we need those ABC’s of water safety in action.

For a seventh straight year, we're tackling water safety and drowning prevention in southern Arizona. Every year, people are surprised to learn the proper way of doing C.P.R., when there is water in the lungs. C.P.R. classes fall under the C in our ABC’s of water safety. When seconds count, you need to know what you're doing. There is no time for fear and confusion. “My brother died of sudden cardiac arrest two years ago this mother's day at a local restaurant.
